Why Your Morning Routine Should Be the First Thing You Do Each Day

It’s 2025, and I’m in the jungle of Tulum teaching at a Luxury Zen Yoga Retreat. As I sit in bed prepping for tomorrow’s coaching workshops, my mind is already on tomorrow’s highlight: teaching my signature morning routine. This isn’t just any exercise—it’s the foundation of success, focus, and resilience. Whether you’re leading teams, coaching others, or simply navigating life’s demands, a strong morning routine sets the tone for everything.

As a coaching psychologist and mentor to coaches and leaders worldwide, I’ve seen firsthand the massive impact of starting the day with intention. If there’s one practice I believe everyone should adopt this year, it’s this. A morning routine isn’t just a trendy concept—it’s a proven way to prime your mind and body for the challenges and opportunities ahead. If you haven’t started one yet, now is the time.

Have you ever wondered why successful people swear by their morning routines? It’s not just a motivational mantra—it’s rooted in science, psychology, and habit formation. The first few moments of your day hold incredible power. When used intentionally, they can transform your mindset, energy, and productivity.

If you’re not convinced about the importance of starting your day with a purposeful morning routine, here’s why it’s a game-changer and why it should be your first priority.

1. It Sets the Tone for Your Day

Your brain is in a highly suggestible state immediately after waking up, thanks to the presence of alpha brainwaves, which bridge the gap between sleep and wakefulness. This is the perfect time to prime your mindset for success.

Starting your day with practices like gratitude or affirmations directs your focus toward positivity and productivity, allowing you to face challenges with a calm, proactive attitude.

2. You Maximize Your Brain’s Peak Performance

The prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making, focus, and problem-solving, is at its sharpest in the morning. Engaging in intentional activities like journaling, goal-setting, or planning utilizes this peak cognitive function. It’s a golden window of clarity, and using it wisely can set you ahead for the entire day.

3. You Leverage Cortisol’s Natural Boost

Contrary to its reputation as a “stress hormone,” cortisol has a natural peak in the morning, giving you energy and alertness to start the day. A well-structured morning routine channels this energy into meaningful activities, like exercise or meditation, instead of letting it spiral into stress or overthinking.

For example, a quick workout or breathing exercises can help stabilize this natural cortisol boost, leaving you focused and energized.

4. It Builds Consistency and Long-Lasting Habits

Our brains thrive on routine. Tying your morning actions to the trigger of waking up taps into the brain’s habit loop (cue, routine, reward). By repeatedly performing positive habits each morning, you establish consistency that carries over into other areas of your life.

Something as simple as starting your day with hydration, stretching, or journaling can create a ripple effect of discipline and productivity.

5. You Create Momentum and Confidence

Morning routines are all about small wins. Whether it’s making your bed, drinking water, or completing a quick meditation, these actions signal accomplishment to your brain. This activates your brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and boosting your motivation to tackle bigger challenges throughout the day.

6. You Avoid Decision Fatigue

Every decision we make throughout the day depletes our mental energy—a phenomenon called decision fatigue. By automating your morning routine, you eliminate unnecessary decisions in the first part of the day, conserving mental energy for more important tasks.

Pre-planning your morning—whether it’s laying out your clothes, setting up your journal, or planning breakfast—removes the guesswork, leaving you with a clear mind.

7. It Aligns with Your Body’s Natural Rhythms

Your body’s circadian rhythm is programmed for peak energy in the morning and relaxation in the evening. Aligning your morning routine with this natural rhythm ensures that you’re taking full advantage of your body’s biology to maximize energy and focus.

For instance, engaging in light physical activity or setting intentions early in the day aligns with your body’s innate drive to be active and alert.

8. You Start Proactively, Not Reactively

Without a structured morning routine, many people fall into the trap of immediately reacting to external demands—emails, social media, or urgent tasks. This reactive start can spike stress and set a negative tone for the day.

By beginning with proactive habits like meditation, gratitude, or planning, you take control of your mindset before external pressures take over.

9. It Boosts Physical and Mental Health

Morning routines that include exercise, mindfulness, and hydration are powerful tools for overall well-being. Movement reduces inflammation, boosts circulation, and improves mood. Similarly, mindfulness practices lower cortisol and enhance mental clarity.

For example, a 10-minute yoga session or drinking a glass of water upon waking can kickstart your day with physical and mental balance.

10. You Utilize Peak Willpower

Willpower is strongest in the morning and diminishes as the day progresses. This makes it the ideal time to tackle activities that require focus, discipline, or effort—like exercise, learning, or deep work. By using your willpower early, you’re more likely to stick to healthy habits and achieve your goals.

How to Create an Effective Morning Routine

Creating a morning routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Start small and build over time. Here are some tips:

  1. Hydrate: Start your day with a glass of water to rehydrate your body.

  2. Move: Incorporate light stretching or exercise to wake up your body.

  3. Set Intentions: Write down your goals or visualize success.

  4. Practice Gratitude: Reflect on things you’re thankful for to cultivate positivity.

  5. Avoid Screens: Delay checking your phone or email to protect your focus.

Why Morning Routines First Thing in the Morning Work

Morning routines work because they capitalize on your brain and body’s natural rhythms. They give you control over your day, prevent decision fatigue, and set a strong foundation for productivity and positivity. By making your morning routine a priority, you’re not just managing your day—you’re mastering it.

The way you start your morning shapes the rest of your day. Instead of rushing into chaos or reacting to external demands, take the first moments of your day to align your mind, body, and emotions. A consistent morning routine isn’t just about doing—it’s about becoming the version of yourself who is ready to conquer the day.

So, what will your morning routine look like tomorrow?
